DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

Dimensional Analysis is a mathematical technique which deals with the dimensions of the different physical quantities (or) parameters involved in a physical problem. It is used to solve engineering problems.

It helps in determining a possible systematic arrangement of different parameters in the physical relationship and combining dimensional variables to get a set of dimensionless parameters

This is achieved by forming a number of non-dimensional group free from a given number of dimensional quantities in such a way that variables which can be reduced and the physical relationship can be expressed in a possible arrangement remaining variables.

It is based on the assumptions that the phenomenon which can be expressed by a dimensionally homogeneous equation with certain variables. Homogeneous means dimensions of left hand side of the relation is equal to the dimensions of right hand side of the relation. All the physical relationships are dimensionally homogeneous.
