Chapter - 1

Introduction to Engineering Graphics

At the end of this chapter we will be able to:

1. Define Engineering Graphics,

2. List out the classification of Engineering Graphics.

3. Understand the importance of Engineering Graphics,

4. Enumerate the B.I.S conventions applicable to Engineering Graphics.

5. Compare the Conventional method of drafting and Computer Aided Drafting.

INTRODUCTION

The art of representation of an object by systematic lines on a paper is called a `Drawing'. Drawing is one of the methods of communication, detailing the features of an object by using different lines and shades for clear understanding. It is a fact that a drawing can interprete well and more effective than written communication.

The drawing may be classified into two main groups, namely (i) Artistic drawing and (ii) Engineering drawing.

The art of representation of an object by an artist is known as `Artistic drawing'. An artistic drawing is generally used by the `Artist' for commercial purpose, like painting boards, banners etc., An artistic drawing is mainly prepared with an intention of projecting an object more attractive with the help of various shades, styles and colours. Dimensions and other technical details of the object are not considered to communicate and the image of the artistic drawing need not be realistic.

The art of representation of engineering objects by an Engineer' (or) 'Draftsman' is known as 'Engineering drawing'. An Engineering drawing is prepared to represent engineering objects like buildings, machines, circuit of motor etc., While preparing an engineering drawing, the shape, dimensions and other technical details of an object are focussed to represent than simply decorating. it with the help of various colours and shades (some of the engineering drawings presented in this text are prepared with different colours to distinguish the main features of an object with the other parts and also to make the students understanding the subject very well at this learning stage. However, engineering drawing is not generally prepared with various colours, hence the students are advised not to use colour pencils in examination.)

Engineering drawing is a graphical representation of any object to detail its technical aspects, prepared strictly as per the standards and using necessary drafting tools and instruments. Hence it is also known as "Engineering Graphics".
