Conventional method of Drafting and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

The conventional method of drafting is the process of preparation of engineering drawings manually with the help of drawing instruments like compass, divider, pencil etc., on a drawing sheet.

After preparing the drawing on a drawing sheet the drawing is traced out by using inkpens to the tracing paper for taking multinumber of prints.

Now a days Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is most generally used for the preparation of Engineering drawings by the use of computer software. Printer (or) Plotter is used for taking multinumber of prints.

Compared to manual drafting, Computer Aided Drafting is faster as well as accurate. Modifications in drawing can be brought out very easily.

But it is an accepted fact that the fundamentals and basic concepts can be very well acquired only by following the conventional method of drafting, using drawing instruments and drawing sheet. It is suggested to expertise the use of CAD system only after understanding engineering graphics by traditional drafting methods.

The preparation of engineering drawing explained in this textbook are based on the manual drafting but all the drawings (output) presented in this textbook are prepared by using Auto CAD (Computer Aided Drafting Software).
