The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recommends the following scales, any one of which may be choosen for a particular drawing depending upon the size and complexity of the object and the size of drawing sheet.

SCALES RECOMMENDED BY BIS

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recommends the following scales, any one of which may be choosen for a particular drawing depending upon the size and complexity of the object and the size of drawing sheet.

Example 1: A 7 cm long line in the drawing represents 14 m long of wall. Determine the Representative Fraction and scale.

Hence scale of drawing is 1 : 200.

Example 2 : A 3 cm diameter of circle in the drawing represents 5 mm diameter of object. Determine the Representative Fraction and scale.

Hence scale of the drawing is 6 : 1.

Example 3 : The shape of a plot is a trapezium having parallel sides 6 m and 4 m and the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides is 5 m. Draw the plot taking representative fraction as 1 : 100.

It is given that the Representative fraction (R.F) is 1 : 100.

Hence draw a line of length 1 cm to represent 1 m actual length.

The representation of the plot on a drawing sheet is shown in Fig. 5.2.
