Engineering Materials and Metallurgy: Unit 0: Review of Crystal Physics

Plane of a Family (or Form)

Definition, Example | Crystal Physics

If sets of equivalent lattice planes are related by the symmetry of the crystal system, then they are called planes of a family or form.

Plane of a Family (or Form)

If sets of equivalent lattice planes are related by the symmetry of the crystal system, then they are called planes of a family or form.

The family of such planes are denoted by enclosing the indices within braces as {h, k, l}

Example: The Miller indices of the surface planes in a cube (1 0 0), (0 1 0), (0 0 1), ...etc., are collectively designated as {100}.
