Mechanical Properties and Testing

Learning Objectives

While reading and after studying this chapter, you will be able to:

● Familiarize the various mechanical properties of materials.

● Understand how plastic deformations in metals occur by slip and twinning.

● Calculate the resolved shear stress in a plane inclined at a known angle to the axis of direct stress.

● Have a basic knowledge on various modes of fracture such as ductile, brit- tle, creep, and fatigue failure modes.

● Distinguish between ductile and brittle fracture modes; and between fatigue and creep fracture modes.

● Describe various mechanical testing of materials-tensile, compression, shear, hardness, impact, fatigue, and creep tests in order to measure/compute var- ious mechanical properties.
