Figure 1.21 shows the velocity relationship in orthogonal cutting.

Figure 1.21 shows the velocity relationship in orthogonal cutting. The various velocities are cutting velocity (V), chip velocity (Vc) and shear velocity (Vs). The chip velocity (Vc) is the velocity of the chip relative to tool and it is directed along the tool face and shear velocity (Vs) is the velocity of chip relative to workpiece which is directed along shear plane.
