Example - 82

An orifice meter with diameter 5cm is inserted in a pipe of 15cm diameter. The pressure gauges fitted upstream and downstream of the orifice meter give readings of 20 N/cm2 and 10 N/cm2 respectively. Co-efficient of discharge in the orifice meter is given as 0.5. Find the discharge of water through pipe. 

Given data:

Dia of orifice (d0) = 0.05m

Dia of pipe (d1) = 0.15m

Pressure of the orifice (P0) = 10N/cm2 = 10 ×104 N/m2

Pressure of the pipe (P1) = 20N/cm2 = 20 × 104 N/m2

Co-efficient of discharge (d) = 0.5

To find:

Discharge (Q)

Solution:

Result :

Discharge (Q) = 0.01395 m3/sec


Example - 83

An orifice meter with orifice diameter 20cm is inserted in a pipe of 40 cm diameter. The U-Tube manometer reading of 40cm of mercury. Find the rate of flow of oil of specific gravity 0.9 when the co-efficient of discharge of the orifice meter is 0.68.

Given data:

Dia of orifice (d0) = 20cm = 0.2m

Dia of pipe (d1) = 40cm = 0.4m

Manometer reading (x) = 40cm = 0.4m 

Co-efficient of discharge (Cd) = 0.68

Pressure of the pipe (P1) = 20N/cm2 = 20 × 104 N/m2 

Specific gravity of oil (S) = 0.9

To find:

Rate of flow of water (Q)

Rate of flow (Q) = 0.232 m3/sec
