Scalars and Vectors

Engineering Mechanics

Scalars are physical quantities that have only magnitude. For example time, speed, density, etc.

Scalars and Vectors

• Scalars are physical quantities that have only magnitude. For example time, speed, density, etc.

• Vectors are physical quantities which possess magnitude as well as direction. For example force, velocity, displacement etc.

• Vectors can be classified into three types: free, sliding and fled. A vector which can be moved parallel to itself in space is called a free vector.

• A vector which acts along a particular line is called a sliding vector. The sliding vector can be shifted to any point on that line along which it acts.

• If a vector occupies a fixed position in space i.e. it has a fixed point of application, it is called a fixed vector.
