UNIT - I Introduction Syllabus: Fundamental Concepts and Principles, Systems of Units. Mechanics • Mechanics is the branch of physical science which deals with the state of rest or motion of bodies that are subjected to the action of forces. • It is subdivided into three parts: mechanics of rigid bodies, mechanics of deformable bodies and fluid mechanics. • This book deals only with mechanics of rigid bodies (i.e. objects that do not get deformed when forces are applied). • The mechanics of rigid bodies is further divided into two parts: statics and dynamics. Statics deals with bodies at rest. Dynamics deals with objects in motion.
