Engineering Mechanics: Unit I: Statics of Particles

General Procedure for Solution

Statics of Particles | Engineering Mechanics

Choose an appropriate method for solution depending upon the given data and the quantities to be determined.

General Procedure for Solution

1. Choose an appropriate method for solution depending upon the given data and the quantities to be determined.

2. Fulfill the requirements to use that particular method.

• For rectangular components, choose appropriate mutually perpendicular X and Y directions.

• For triangle law, draw the triangle of forces by drawing one of the given vectors from the tip of the other and the resultant from the base of first vector to end point of second vector.

• For parallelogram law, define P, Q, R, α and θ.

• For Lami's theorem, convert the problem of resultant to an equilibrium problem using equilibrant. Show all forces away from the point.

3. Use equations of that chosen method to solve for the unknowns.
