Chapter - 10

Freehand Sketching

At the end of this chapter we will be able to:

1. Define Freehand sketching.

2. Understand the Importance of Freehand sketching.

3. Describe the method of Freehand sketching of Straightlines, Circles, Arcs and Curves.

4. Sketch the Multiview Orthographic Projections.

INTRODUCTION

The method of presenting the orthographic projections of an object was explained in the previous chapter. The designer designs a component and prepares the orthographic projections for clear representation of the component and then these multiviews are handed over to manufacturing section (or) work site. But in practice the multiviews are neatly drawn on a drawing sheet by a draughtsman using the necessary drawing instruments.

Hence the designer after designing the component prepares a rough sketch of the component (or) orthographic projections without using any drawing instrument to handover to the draughtsman for its neat drawing. This kind of rough sketch prepared by the designer / engineer is known as Free hand sketching. An engineer should be well versed in freehand sketching for his communication ability. The art of preparing freehand sketches is explained in this chapter.
