Engineering Mechanics: Unit II: Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies

Free Body Diagram

Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies

Free body diagram is the isolated diagram of an object system of objects/any point in the system in which all external forces and couple moments acting on it are shown.

Free Body Diagram

• Free body diagram is the isolated diagram of an object system of objects/any point in the system in which all external forces and couple moments acting on it are shown.

• The external forces to be included in a free body diagram are as follows:

i) Forces applied on the body.

ii) Weight of the body which is the gravitational force exerted by the earth on the body

iii) Forces transmitted through cables, rods and springs.

iv) Support reactions which are forces or couple moments exerted by supporting mechanisms which restrict motion of the body.

v) Frictional force (if considered).

In this chapter, friction will be neglected.
