Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies

Syllabus Equilibrium in Two and Three Dimensions - Reactions at Supports and Connections.

Introduction

• The methods to reduce coplanar and non-coplanar non-concurrent force systems to equivalent force-couple systems were discussed.

• If both the equivalent force and the couple become zero for a rigid body under the action of all external forces, the rigid body is said to be in equilibrium.

• To identify all forces acting on a rigid body, its free body diagram is drawn and then equations of equilibrium are used. These methods are discussed in this chapter for two and three dimensional cases.
