CONSTRUCTION OF PARABOLA BY PARALLELOGRAM METHOD

Data known :

1. Base

2. Axis

3. Angle between base and axis

Example 9: Construct a parabola of base 90 mm and axis 60 mm by parallelogram method with angle between base and axis 75°.

Procedure:

1. Draw a parallelogram ABCD of base 90mm and axis 60mm with bel included angle 75°.

2. Locate the mid point of AB at O, mid point of DC at E. Join O and E which represents the axis of parabola.

3. Divide AO and AB into same number of equal parts (say 6) and name the parts as 1', 2', 3' etc. on AD from A and 1, 2, 3 etc., on AO from A.

4. Join the points 1', 2', 3' etc. with E.

5. Draw lines through 1, 2, 3 etc. parallel to OE to cut E-1', E-2', E-3' etc. at P1, P2, P3 etc. respectively.

6. Join the points A, P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and E by a smooth curve which is half of the parabola.

7. Repeating the same procedure on the right side of axis, the other half of parabola is constructed.
