Chapter - 6 Conic Sections At the end of this chapter we will be able to: 1. Define Conic sections. 2. Understand the various types of conic sections. 3. Know the engineering applications of conic sections. 4. Understand the various terminologies used in conic sections. 5. Construct ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. Circle, Semi-circle and Quadrant of the circle are widely used in curved objects. But in many engineering practice we come across a number of objects with different plane curves. Some of these curves are obtained by cutting a right circular cone. The curves which are obtained by cutting a right circular cone with the help of a cutting plane in different positions relative to the axis of the cone are called conic sections. Examples: Ellipse, Parabola and Hyperbola. The construction of these conic sections are detailed in this chapter.INTRODUCTION
