Introduction

• In previous chapters, the forces were considered to act at a point.

• However, in actual practical applications such forces do not exist. The forces are distributed over some finite area and can be replaced by an equivalent single resultant force acting through a point.

• For example, the gravitational force acts on each and every particle of an object. All these forces, distributed over the entire object, can be replaced by a single force acting through a point.

• In this chapter we discuss the methods to replace distributed forces by a single force acting through a point.
