Kinematics of Mechanisms - Theory of Machines

In this method, the velocity of links in a mechanism are determined using the following steps.

VELOCITY ANALYSIS PROCEDURE BY RELATIVE VELOCITY METHOD

In this method, the velocity of links in a mechanism are determined using the following steps.

Step 1: Construction of configuration diagram

Configuration diagram is a skeleton or a line diagram which represents the givén mechanism.

To determine the velocity of various links of a mechanism, first we have to draw the configuration diagram of the mechanism.

Step 2: Calculation of velocity of input link

In order to draw the velocity diagram, the velocity of atleast any one link is required. Usually the length and speed of the input link are given. Then the velocity of input link is given by

Vinput link = ωinput link × (Length of input link)

Step 3: Construction of velocity diagram

By using the configuration diagram drawn, draw the velocity diagram for the given mechanism by a relative velocity method.

Step 4: Determination of velocity of various links

By measurement from the velocity diagram drawn, one can determine the velocity of any link of the given mechanism.
