The machine tool which performs multiple operations in a single machine is called general purpose machine tool.

Unit - 2

TURNING MACHINES

Centre lathe, constructional features, specification, operations - taper turning methods, thread cutting methods, special attachments, surface roughness in turning, machining time and power estimation. Special lathes - Capstan and turret lathes - tool layout automatic lathes: semi-automatic - single spindle: Swiss type, automatic screw type - multi spindle.

GENERAL PURPOSE MACHINE TOOLS

The machine tool which performs multiple operations in a single machine is called general purpose machine tool. The basic machine tools which are commonly used for general purposes are:

(i) Lathes

(ii) Drilling machines

(iii) Shaping machines

(iv) Planning machines

(v) Slotting machines

(vi) Milling machines

(vii) Boring machines

(viii) Hobbing machines

(ix) Gear shaping machines

(x) Broaching machines

(xi) Grinding machines.
