The tangent cams are usually symmetrical about the centre line of camshaft.

The tangent cams are usually symmetrical about the centre line of camshaft.

When the flanks of the cam are straight and tangential to the base circle and nose circle, then the cam is known as a tangent cam.

Applications: The tangent cams with roller followers are used for operating inlet and exhaust valves of IC engines.


Fig.3.53 illustrates a typical tangent cam with reciprocating roller follower. In Fig.3.53, EG and 13 are two straight flanks of the cam, and O and O, are the centres of base circle and nose circle respectively.
