Problem 3.25

Estimate the machining time that will be required to finish a vertical flat surface of length 120 mm and depth 15 mm by an 8 teeth HSS end mill cutter of 32 mm diameter and 60 mm length in a milling machine. Assume, cutting velocity: 36 m/min, feed = 0.12 mm/tooth.

AU Problem 3.2

In a face-milling operation, the workpiece dimensions are 100 mm by 250 mm. The cutter is 150 mm diameter, has eight teeth, and rotates at 300 rpm. The depth of cut is 3 mm and the feed is 0.125 mm/tooth. Assume that the specific energy requirement for this material is 5 Ws/mm' and that only 75% of the cutter diameter is engaged during cutting. Calculate (1) the power required and (2) the material removal rate.

Given data:

L = 250 mm

W = 100 mm

fi = 0.125 mm/tooth

d = 3 mm

D = 150 mm

n = 8

N = 300 rpm

Specific energy, Ps = 5 Ws/mm3

Engagement of the cutter = 75%
