Solved Anna University Question Papers B.E./B.TECH. DEGREE EXAMINATION - May/June 2015 Third Semester Mechanical Engineering ME 6302-MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY-I (Common to Industrial Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management) and Mechanical and Automation Engineering) Time: Three hours Maximum: 100 Marks (Regulation 2013) Answer ALL questions Part A - (10 x 2 = 20 Marks) 1. List the different types of patterns. 1. Solid or single piece pattern 2. Split pattern 3. Loose piece pattern 4. Match plate pattern 5. Sweep pattern 6. Skeleton pattern 7. Segmental pattern 8. Shell pattern. 2. Write the applications of core prints. Core prints are used to make holes in engine blocks, gears and pulleys. 3. Name the various causes for the defect porosity in welding. Porosity is caused by improper gas shielding, moisture in the electrode, incorrect welding technique, improper cleaning of weld surface, sulfur in weld metal or surface contaminants. They occur mainly due to entrapped gases. Presence of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen in the solidifying metal produces porosity. 4. Write the difference between brazing and soldering. 5. What are the various forming processes? 1. Forging 2. Bending 3. Drawing 4. Squeezing 5. Embossing and 6. Nibbling 6. Name the various defects in parts produced by drawing. 1. Internal cracking 2. Surface defect 7. How are sheet metal operations classified and what are they? Sheet metal processes are classified as follows: (i) Shearing process (a) Punching (b) Blanking (c) Perforating (d) Parting (e) Notching (f) Lancing. (ii) Forming process (a) Bending (b) Stretching (c) Drawing and (d) Roll forming. (iii) Finishing process. 8. What is flanging? Flanging is a process of bending the edges of sheet metals to 90°. It is also called edge bending or wiping-die bending. 9. Define polyaddition. Polyaddition is a process in which many monomers are bonded together via rearrangement of bonds without the loss of any atom or molecule under specific conditions of heat, pressure, and/or the presence of a catalyst. 10. Write short notes on the application of plastics. Applications of plastics in different domains are listed below: Part B - (5 x 16 = 80 Marks) 11. (a) (i) Explain the properties required for moulding sand. Refer chapter 1.8.3 in Page 1.19. (ii) Explain the preparation of moulding sand process. Refer chapter 1.8.4 in Page 1.21. Or (b) (i) Explain any one type of centrifugal casting with a neat diagram. Refer chapter 1.14.6 in Page 1.83. (ii) Name any five casting defects and explain the remedies for those defects.
