Introductions can be very difficult, particularly in another language. The language used is fairly formal and this section will help you be prepared for this. There is a range of ways to introduce yourself and people. We develop and market software for the travel industry. I joined the company in 2004. I'm married with two children aged 4 and 8. I'm Jens Bauer and I work for Arabella Services in Hamburg. The company plans and manages corporate events for large multinational companies. I work in operations and I am responsible for ensuring that events run smoothly and within budget. I have worked at Arabella Services since leaving college in 2005. Hamburg is a great place to live because in my free time I can get into my boat and go sailing. And it gives me the opportunity to go swimming and listen to some great jazz in my free time. The situation is semi- formal) Remember... ● A Do not use titles (such as Mr, Ms, Dr, Professor) when introducing yourself. Exceptions are the titles Sister, Brother, and sometimes Mrs and Dr (medical). ● A When introducing people to one another, it is considered polite to first introduce a woman to a man, a younger person to someone older, a professionally junior person to someone senior at work, a client to a colleague and a guest to the host. ● A When introducing others, say whenever possible something about the person you are introducing, for example This is Smita, my cousin. Smita writes children's books. Activity -1 - Express your view Tell the students that you want each of them to be ready to talk for exactly four minutes on a subject they care about. Each week select a name randomly (perhaps from names in a hat). That student must prepare his or her talk for the following week. At the end of the talk the other students can ask questions and express how they feel about the ideas expressed.
