PNEUMATIC POWER PACKS • Like hydraulic power pack, a pneumatic power pack is a self-contained unit (stand- alone unit) that is used instead of a built-in power supply for pneumatic machinery. • It works to apply the air pressure needed to drive motors, cylinders, and other complementary parts of a given pneumatic system. • The pneumatic power pack is also called as pneumatic power unit. • The various components and their functions of a pneumatic power pack are presented in Table 16.17. Table 16.17. Components of a pneumatic power pack 1. Electric motor: An electric motor is used to drive the compressor. 2. Compressor: A compressor is used to compress the incoming atmosphere air so as to increase the pressure of the air. 3. Air cooler: Air cooler is used to lower the temperature of the compressed air. 4. Reservoir (or air tank): An air tank is provided to store the compressed air required for the operations. 5. Air dryer/separator: An air dryer is used to remove the moisture from the air. 6. Valves: Valves are fitted in the system to control air direction, pressure, and flow rate. 7. FRL unit: FRL unit is used for secondary treatment of air. • The general arrangement of a pneumatic system is shown in Fig.16.15. • Pneumatic power packs are similar to hydraulic power packs in terms of working, applications, installation, etc., except that the compressed air and pneumatic components are used in place of pressurized hydraulic liquid and hydraulic components.1.
