PISTON PUMPS In piston pumps, the pumping action is affected by a piston that moves in a reciprocating cycle through a cylinder. The basic operation of piston pumps are very similar to that of the reciprocating engines. • Piston pumps can be classified as shown in Fig.4.14. • Axial Vs. Radial piston pump: In axial piston pumps, pistons are arranged parallel to the axis of cylinder block. In radial piston pumps, pistons are arranged radially with respect to the axis of cylinder block. Now we shall discuss the construction and working of the following types of piston pumps in the following sections. 1. In-line swash-plate type axial piston pump, 2.
