The following tips may be used in locating the instantaneous centres in a mechanism by visual inspection.

LOCATION OF INSTANTANEOUS CENTRES BY VISUAL INSPECTION

The following tips may be used in locating the instantaneous centres in a mechanism by visual inspection.

1. When two links are connected by a pin joint, the instantaneous centre lies on the centre of the pin, as shown in Figs.2.29(a) and (b).


2. When the two links have a sliding contact, the instantaneous centre lies at infinity in a direction perpendicular to the path of motion of the slider, as shown in Fig.2.29(c).

3. When the two links have a pure rolling contact, the instantaneous centre lies on their point of contact, as shown in Figs.2.29(d) and (e).
