Involute

Engineering Graphics (EG)

Involute is a curve traced by an end of a string or thread, when it is unwound from a circle or a polygon, the thread being kept tight.

INVOLUTE

Involute is a curve traced by an end of a string or thread, when it is unwound from a circle or a polygon, the thread being kept tight.

Involute may also be defined as a curve traced out by a point on a straight line which rolls around a circle or a polygon, without slipping.

Consider a circle of diameter `D' wounded by a thread as shown in Fig. 7.14. When the thread is unwound, keeping the thread is tight, for one complete revolution of circle, the thread will have a profile as shown in Fig. 7.14(b). It is to be noted that when the thread is unwound, the thread is always tangential to the circle and a point on thread will generate an involute profile. Involute can be drawn for a circle or any polygon.

Gear teeth profiles (Fig. 7.15a) and casings of centrifugal pumps are of involute of a circle.
