Heat Treatment

Engineering Materials and Metallurgy

Understand the metallurgical reactions that occur in heat treatment.

Heat Treatment

Learning Objectives

While reading and after studying this chapter, you will be able to:

● Understand the metallurgical reactions that occur in heat treatment.

● Study and have a knowledge of the vari- ous heat treatments-annealing, normalising, hardening, tempering-which may be given to steels.

● Understand how these range of heat treatments affect the structure and properties of the material.

● Understand T-T-T and C-C-T diagrams and show how non-equilibrium phases can be formed in steel structures.

● Define and measure the hardness and utilize hardenability curves for predicting hardness values of selected steel products.

● Relate the steel-heating processes with various case hardening processes such as carburising, nitriding, cyaniding, carbonitriding, flame and induction hardening.
