gear tooth failure

Gears and Gear Trains - Theory of Machines

The two modes of gear tooth failure are:

GEAR TOOTH FAILURE

The two modes of gear tooth failure are:

1. Tooth breakage, and

2. Tooth wear (or surface deterioration).

(a) Abrasion,

(b) Pitting, and

(c) Scaring or seizure.

Example 4.1

A toothed wheel has 112 teeth. Its module is 2 mm. Find the circular pitch, pitch diameter and the diametral pitch.

Given data:

T = 112; m = 2 mm

Solution:

(i) Pitch diameter (D): We know that,

(ii) Circular pitch (pc):

(iii) Diametral pitch (pd):

Example 4.2

Two mating spur gears have 74 and 36 teeth. Their common module is 5 mm. Determine the centre to centre distance between the gears axis.

Given data:

TA = 74; TB = 36; m = 5 mm

Solution:
