GEAR PUMPS

1. Introduction

Gear pumps are the simplest and the most widely used pumps for hydraulic systems.

Gear pump is the most robust positive displacement pump, having only two moving parts.

All the gear pumps are invariably fixed displacement type. That means, the amount of fluid pumped by these pumps is theoretically constant for each revolution of the driver shaft.

2. Principle of Working

The basic principle of this type of pump is that as pair of gears being driven by an external means (electric motor, engine, etc.), a partial vacuum is created in the pump. The gear motion generates a suction at the inlet, which causes fluid to be drawn into the pump housing. The fluid is drawn through the pump and is displaced as the teeth mesh on the outlet side.
