Gears and Gear Trains - Theory of Machines

The material for pinion should always be better than the material of the mating gear.

GEAR MATERIALS

1. Metallic gears: Cast iron, steel and bronze.

2. Non-metallic gears: Raw hide, wood, compressed paper and synthetic resins like nylon, etc.

Note

The material for pinion should always be better than the material of the mating gear. Because the teeth of pinion undergo more number of revolutions than those of gear and hence quicker wear.
