Definition: Flow rate (or discharge) is the volume of the liquid flowing through a pipe in a specific period of time.

As shown in Fig.3.13, the flow rate can be calculated using the relation,


The flow rate can also be calculated by using the relation,

where

A = Area of cross-section of the pipe in m2, and

V = Average velocity of the liquid in m/s.
