Chapter - 16

Development of Surfaces

At the end of this chapter we will be able to:

1. Understand the necessity of development of surfaces.

2. List out the methods to draw the development of surfaces.

3. Draw the development of surfaces of simple solids.

4. Draw the development of surfaces of truncated simple solids.

5. Draw the development of surfaces of solids with square and cylindrical cutouts.

6. Draw the development of three dimensional objects.

INTRODUCTION

The procedure of obtaining orthographic projections of different solids with various types of cutting planes were presented in the previous chapter. As we know a solid figure is formed by joining a number of plane figures in proper order. ie., by folding a plane area in a proper order, a solid figure can be obtained or in otherwords by unfolding a solid figure the plane area which was used for making that solid figure can be obtained. This process is known as `Development of surface' of the given solid. This chapter deals with the development of simple solids, solids with cut portion, truncated solids and some of the standard objects like tray, funnel, box etc.
