CUTTING TOOLS In the context of machining, a cutting tool or cutter is any tool that is used to remove material from the workpiece by means of shear deformation. There are various types of tools used for metal cutting depending on the method and machines used. Tools used in machining operations are classified into the following two types. 1. Single point cutting tool 2. Multipoint cutting tool Single point cutting tools have only one cutting edge. They are used for turning, facing, chamfering, boring, shaping, thread cutting and parting-off operations. Multipoint cutting tools have more than one cutting edge. They are used for knurling, drilling, broaching, grinding and milling operations. Cutting tools can be classified according to the motion as follows: 1. Linear motion tools 2. Rotary motion tool 3. Linear and rotary motion tools Linear motion tools move linearly along the axis of the tool or perpendicular to the axis during cutting. Examples: Lathe, boring, broaching, planning, shaping tools, etc. Rotary motion tools rotate about the axis during cutting. Examples: Milling cutters, grinding wheels, etc. Linear and rotary motion tools rotate about the axis as well as move linearly during cutting. Examples: Drilling cutters, honing tools, boring heads, etc.
