CONTROL OF A SINGLE-ACTING HYDRAULIC CYLINDER

(SIMPLE RECIPROCATING CIRCUIT)

1. Functional and Operational Requirements

A single-acting spring return hydraulic cylinder is to be provided with, a forward and retract control. The piston is to operate continuously without any hold in between extreme positions.

2. Circuit

The hydraulic circuit meeting the above functional and operational requirements is illustrated in Fig.8.2. This circuit has a reservoir, a pump, a pressure relief valve, a 3/2 DC valve, and a single-acting cylinder.

3. Operation

Extension: When the 3/2 DC vale is manually shifted to the left mode (i.e., left envelope flow path configuration), the oil flows from the pump to blind end of cylinder. This pump flow extends the cylinder. Once full extension is over, the 3/2 DC valve is shifted to the right envelope.

Retraction: When the 3/2 DC valve is shifted to the right mode, the pump flow is diverted to the tank via the pressure relief valve. Now the spring in the cylinder retracts the piston to send the oil back to the tank.

Remind yourself that all fluid power circuits should be drawn with all components shown in their unactuated position.
