Manufacturing Processes: Unit III: Bulk Deformation Processes

Advantages and Disadvantages of forging process

Components produced by the forging process are much stronger.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FORGING PROCESS

Advantages of forging:

(i) Components produced by the forging process are much stronger.

(ii) Forging provides better mechanical properties, ductility and fatigue and impact resistance.

(iii) Almost all metals such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals can be forged.

(iv) Less chances of defects in forged components.

(v) The metal parts can be easily shaped into the required form without damaging the structure.

(vi) It provides the increased ductility and resistance to impact loading.

Disadvantages of forging:

(i) Precise tolerances are less.

(ii) It is possible warping of the material during cooling process.

(iii) Metal grain structure varies.

(iv) It is possible reactions between surrounding atmosphere and metal.

(v) The metal surfaces must be clean and free of scale before forging occurs.

(vi) The metal is less ductile.

(vii) Residual stress may occur.

(viii) Heavier and more powerful equipment is needed.

(ix) Stronger tooling is required.
